Peter formed Humble Pie with ex Small Faces singer Steve Marriott ( along with Greg Ridley on bass and Jerry Shirley on drums ) in late 1968 and their debut single 'Natural Born Boogie' was their only UK hit, reaching #2 in the charts in August 1969. Marriott's voice and Peter's guitar work gave the band a great identity.

After the first two albums - 'As Safe As Yesterday Is' and 'Town And Country' - which were more acoustic, the band adopted a more aggressive hard rock style. Two more albums followed, 'Humble Pie' in 1970 and 'Rock On' in 1971.....both albums showed that Humble Pie was leading the way with their mix of rock and roll, R'n'B and jazz music - which was how the band were presented on the live double album that followed, 'Performance - Rockin' the Fillmore', recorded on their 1971 tour and which was a Top 40 success in the UK and the US. ![]()
Peter realised that the band was going to be important, but did not want to be pigeonholed in that style, so made a brave move to go solo. Humble Pie's next album 'Smokin' was their best seller, reaching #6 in the US charts in 1972, and the following year 'Eat It' showed a leaning towards blues and soul influences, and sadly, their fan base began to drift away. ![]()
The band split in 1975, but reformed with little success in 1980. Steve Marriott and Peter worked again together in the early 90's, producing 4 songs, 3 of which were recorded and have appeared on Peter's later solo albums.
